What an implant is
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It has three parts: the implant itself, a small titanium or zirconia screw placed in the jawbone; the abutment, a connector that sits on top; and the crown, the visible tooth. Over a few months, the bone bonds to the implant surface, a process called osseointegration, which is what makes implants stable enough to chew on like a natural tooth.
Implants can replace a single tooth, support a bridge for several missing teeth, or hold a full-arch bridge or denture. Unlike a conventional bridge, a single implant does not require drilling the neighbouring teeth.
Are you a candidate?
Most healthy adults who have lost a tooth can have an implant. The main requirements are enough healthy bone, healthy gums, and general health that allows minor surgery and healing. Your dentist will take a 3D CBCT scan to measure bone height and width and check the position of nerves and sinuses.
Some factors increase the risk of complications and need discussing before treatment. They do not always rule implants out, but they change the plan.
- Smoking, including shisha and vaping, which roughly doubles the risk of implant failure in many studies.
- Poorly controlled diabetes.
- Untreated gum disease. It should be treated and stable first.
- Heavy grinding or clenching, which may need a night guard afterwards.
- Some medicines, including certain osteoporosis drugs and cancer treatments. Always tell your dentist about your medicines.
- Teenagers whose jaws are still growing usually wait until growth is complete.
The treatment stages
A typical single-implant treatment in Dubai follows these steps. Timings vary with bone quality and whether grafting is needed.
- Consultation and CBCT scan: assessment, options and an itemised quote. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.
- Extraction, if the tooth is still present. Sometimes the implant is placed at the same time; otherwise the socket heals for 2 to 4 months, often with a socket graft.
- Bone grafting or sinus lift, if needed. Either done with the implant or as a separate stage with 4 to 9 months of healing.
- Implant placement: under local anaesthetic, usually 30 to 90 minutes for one implant. Most people return to work the next day.
- Healing and integration: typically 2 to 4 months in the lower jaw and 3 to 6 months in the upper jaw. A temporary tooth can usually be worn.
- Impressions or a digital scan for the crown, then fitting the abutment and final crown 1 to 3 weeks later.
- Review after a few weeks, then regular check-ups and cleanings.
Questions to ask at your implant consultation
Implant quotes are hard to compare unless you know what to ask. Bring these questions to your consultation and ask for the answers in writing.
- Which implant brand and model will you use, and why?
- Do I need a bone graft or sinus lift, and is it included in the quote?
- What crown material do you recommend, and which lab makes it?
- How many visits are involved, and are follow-ups included?
- What happens if the implant fails to integrate?
Same-day and immediate implants
Some clinics advertise 'teeth in a day' or immediate implants. In suitable cases, an implant can be placed at the same time as an extraction, and sometimes a temporary crown can be attached the same day. This works best with good bone, no active infection and a bite that does not put heavy force on the new tooth.
Immediate loading is not right for everyone. If your dentist recommends a staged approach, it is usually because they want the implant to integrate fully before chewing forces are applied. Ask why a particular approach is recommended for you.
Implant brands and materials
Dubai clinics use a wide range of implant systems, from premium Swiss, Swedish and German brands with decades of clinical research to mid-range and budget systems. Brand matters for two reasons: long-term clinical evidence, and the availability of compatible parts if you need a repair years later, perhaps in another country.
Titanium remains the standard implant material and has the most research behind it. Zirconia (ceramic) implants are an option for people who want a metal-free solution, though they have less long-term data. Crowns are usually zirconia, lithium disilicate or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Ask your clinic to write down the brand, model and size of your implant for your records.
What implants cost in Dubai
Typical published prices in Dubai are AED 4,500 to 10,000 for a single implant including the abutment and crown, as of October 2026. Bone grafting adds roughly AED 1,500 to 4,500 and a sinus lift AED 3,500 to 10,000. Full-arch fixed implant bridges are usually quoted at AED 35,000 to 75,000 per arch. These are estimates; confirm the price with the clinic.
Most UAE health plans do not cover implants, though some premium plans contribute to the crown. Prices are often 15 to 25 percent lower in Sharjah and the northern emirates. Our dental implant cost guide gives a full breakdown and what to compare between quotes.
Recovery and long-term care
After implant surgery, expect mild swelling and soreness for 2 to 4 days. Your dentist will give aftercare instructions, typically soft foods for a few days, avoiding smoking, gentle rinsing and pain relief as needed. Call the clinic if you have increasing pain or swelling after day three, fever or persistent bleeding.
Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed, a condition called peri-implantitis. Brushing twice daily, cleaning around the implant with floss or interdental brushes, and professional cleanings every 6 months help prevent it. With good care, most implants last many years, and long-term studies report survival rates above 90 percent after 10 years.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the whole implant process take?
Usually 3 to 6 months from placement to final crown. If you need an extraction or bone graft first, it can take 6 to 12 months.
Is getting an implant painful?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Most people describe discomfort afterwards as similar to or less than an extraction, manageable with standard pain relief.
Who should place my implant?
An oral surgeon, periodontist, prosthodontist, or a general dentist with documented implant training and experience. Ask how many implants they place each year and to see examples.
Can implants fail?
Yes, though it is uncommon. Early failure happens when the implant does not integrate; late failure is often linked to peri-implantitis, smoking or overload. Ask about the clinic's policy if an implant fails.
