Both straighten teeth, in different ways

Fixed braces use brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire that the orthodontist adjusts every 4 to 8 weeks. Clear aligners, of which Invisalign is the best-known brand, use a series of removable plastic trays, each worn for one to two weeks, that move teeth in small steps. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are usually bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip.

For many mild and moderate cases, both work well. The right choice depends on the complexity of your bite, your lifestyle, how disciplined you will be, and budget.

There are also hybrid approaches. Some orthodontists start with braces for difficult movements and finish with aligners, or use aligners for most of treatment and add short periods of elastics. Ask your orthodontist to explain the reasoning behind any plan, and what would happen if you changed your mind partway.

Effectiveness

Braces remain the most versatile option for complex movements: large rotations, significant vertical movements, closing extraction spaces and correcting severe bite problems. Aligner technology has improved considerably, and experienced orthodontists now treat many complex cases with aligners, but results depend heavily on planning and on the patient wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day.

If an orthodontist recommends braces for your case, ask why. If a provider recommends aligners for a complex case, ask how many similar cases they have treated and what the backup plan is if teeth do not track.

Lifestyle and comfort

For busy professionals in the UAE who travel often, aligners are often more convenient, since you can carry several sets. For people who know they will struggle to wear trays consistently, braces may produce a more reliable result.

  • Appearance: aligners are nearly invisible; ceramic braces are less visible than metal; lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth.
  • Eating: aligners are removed to eat, so no food restrictions, but you must brush before putting them back. With braces you avoid hard and sticky foods.
  • Cleaning: aligners make brushing and flossing easier. Braces need extra care to prevent decay and white marks around the brackets.
  • Discomfort: both cause pressure for a few days after each change. Braces can rub the cheeks; aligners can have sharp edges that need smoothing.
  • Visits: braces need adjustments every 4 to 8 weeks; aligners need checks every 6 to 10 weeks.
  • Discipline: aligners only work when worn. Braces work full time without effort.

Teenagers

For teens, compliance is the main consideration. Teen aligner versions include wear indicators, and many teenagers do well with them, but lost or unworn trays are common. Braces remove that risk. Metal braces in fun colours are popular with younger teens; ceramic braces suit those who are self-conscious.

An orthodontic assessment around age 7 to 9 can identify problems that benefit from early treatment, such as crossbites or very protruding front teeth. Most comprehensive treatment starts between 11 and 14, once most adult teeth have come through.

Adults

Adults can have orthodontic treatment at any age as long as their gums and bone are healthy. Gum disease must be treated first, since moving teeth with active gum disease can accelerate bone loss. Adults often choose aligners for appearance, but braces remain a good choice for complex cases. Treatment sometimes forms part of a wider plan, for example aligning teeth before veneers or implants so less tooth needs to be removed later.

Adults who have had braces as teenagers and noticed their teeth moving back are among the most common aligner patients. If this is you, a limited course of treatment followed by consistent retainer wear may be enough, and it is usually cheaper than comprehensive treatment.

Questions to ask at your orthodontic consultation

Orthodontic quotes in Dubai vary widely in what they include. Before choosing, ask each provider the same questions so you can compare like for like. Ask for the answers in writing, along with the total fee and the payment schedule.

It is reasonable to ask to see before-and-after photos of cases similar to yours, treated by the same clinician. If you travel often or are likely to leave the UAE during treatment, ask how that would be handled, since transferring orthodontic treatment between clinics can be complicated and costly.

  • Is my case mild, moderate or complex, and why?
  • How long will treatment take, and how often will I need to visit?
  • How many refinements, or replacement aligners, are included?
  • Are retainers included, and what do replacements cost?
  • What happens if my teeth do not move as planned?

Treatment time and retention

Mild cases often take 4 to 8 months with either approach; comprehensive treatment typically takes 12 to 24 months. Without retainers, teeth tend to move back. Most orthodontists recommend long-term retainer wear, either a fixed wire bonded behind the front teeth, removable clear retainers at night, or both. Budget for replacement retainers every few years.

Choosing a provider in the UAE

Orthodontics is a recognised specialty, and specialist orthodontists hold a Specialist or Consultant Orthodontics title on the DHA, DOH or MOHAP registers. Many general dentists also offer aligners, often for mild cases. For moderate or complex problems, or for children and teenagers, a specialist orthodontist is generally the safer choice. Be cautious with remote-only aligner services that do not include an in-person examination and X-rays.

Costs in Dubai

Typical published prices in Dubai, as of October 2026: metal braces AED 7,000 to 15,000, ceramic braces AED 10,000 to 18,000, lingual braces AED 20,000 to 35,000, limited aligner treatment AED 8,000 to 14,000, and comprehensive Invisalign AED 16,000 to 25,000. These are estimates; confirm what is included, especially retainers and refinements. Adult orthodontics is usually excluded by insurance; some family plans cover part of the cost for children with pre-approval.

Frequently asked questions

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

Not usually. For similar cases, treatment times are comparable. Aligners can be quicker for mild cases; braces may be more efficient for complex movements.

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces in Dubai?

Comprehensive Invisalign is typically a few thousand dirhams more than metal braces. Ceramic braces and aligners are often priced similarly.

Can I get aligners if I have crowns or implants?

Often yes, though implants cannot be moved. Your orthodontist will plan around them.

Do I have to wear a retainer forever?

Most orthodontists recommend wearing retainers at night long-term, because teeth naturally shift throughout life.
